In fact there are no direct remarks against Karunakaran in the film. The original Ramakrishna Iyer in his office may be worse than the one depicted by Siddique in the film. Bureaucracy was that much shoddier on those days. If Kamal has cast Karunakaran as a ferocious speeding minister whose police men in the pilot vehicle abusing the road-side dwellers, then it would have been a spot on attempt to put Karunakaran in bad light. Kamal has not done anything like that.
Kamal has created history in Malayalam film industry and this one film alone is sufficient to remember him in future. The portrayal of the’ Pulaya girl’ as heroine in the original film is marvellous. A special praise is warranted to the actress who has meticulously done the job.

Solaman Saar: have you seen the film? If so well and good, as well as bad and mad. You have also joined the controversy. EH ! ? The matter of controversy, you have not touched upon, that is: whether a silent film cane be fenced in to any particular Language category ? What is your opinion : is it a Malayalam film or a Tamil film ? After I see your reply I will tell my opinion. Best wishes till then. Afterwards I may change my wishes.
ReplyDeleteI have seen the film at Chithranjali.
ReplyDeleteEarly Charlie Chaplin films were silent. Yet they considered as English films. Then why can't we think J C Daniel's film 'Vigatha kumaran' is first in the Malayalam

Correct; At the time this Vigatha Kumaran was produced, J.C.Daniel's native place was in the Travancore State area.. 2) The title Vigatha Kumaran is Malayalam, and not Tamil. 3) Even if there wasn't any sound in the film, there must be titles in the beginning.. That has to be checked : whether they are Malayalam or Tamil or English. Then there is the cultural touches and dress. To decide on this matter one has to see this film. At that period the celluloid used was Nitrate and it is doubtful that there are some pieces of the film for verification. Then there is the script, Mrs. Daniel's letter to Chelangatan, in.Malayalam. All these point to the fact the film is Malayalam. Apart from these there is another point : Have the Tamil people put up a claim for their first film.
DeleteHai Shenoi Sar.
ReplyDeleteI think, asw the original print is not available your suggestion that Mrs. Daniel's letter to Chelangadan, should be taken as a solid proof for the claim that Vigathkumaran is the first Malyalam movie. Further cultural minister K C Joseph's statement that an award would be instituted in the name of firstfilm heroine P K Rosy is admirable.
